Scramble ferns, bennettites, seed ferns, maidenhair, conifers, and cycads provided the staple diet for Stegosaurus and most of those herbivores which grazed on lower vegetation. A powerful beak was used to crop this vegetation and it is likely that the matter was stored in a cavernous gut for several days whilst it fermented, releasing the necessary nutrients essential for survival.
